Frequently Asked Questions

Why hire a Registered Nurse from The Baby Grove?

Registered Nurses are trained healthcare professionals qualified to care for, assess and educate individuals within a broad spectrum.  At The Baby Grove, each nurse has clinical experience, both in hospitals and in the home, in maternity, newborn and lactation care.  We are able to evaluate and address medical issues that commonly arise among moms and newborns.  We also have strong expertise in preventative care and can offer assistance and education in order to help avoid these issues. We have a broad skill set and multiple ways to address challenges and adapt to situations and environments best suited to your family’s needs.  We mentor you and your family about newborn care as well as focus on how to care for yourself.  We provide you with in-home care and teachable moments.  With the help and knowledge you gain from working with a Registered Nurse, you will feel much more prepared and confident to take care of your baby.  We believe in a holistic approach to nursing and will work with you to make sure that you and your family are healthy, happy and safe.

How will my nurse help me through childbirth?

The birth of a new baby is such an exciting time, but can also be filled with questions and anxiety.  A nurse from The Baby Grove will meet with you prenatally to answer questions you may have regarding your upcoming birth and the arrival of your baby.  We can assist with writing your birth plan to help achieve your desired birth experience.  Once you are in early labor, your nurse will come to your home to assist you with non-pharmaceutical pain relief methods including breathing techniques, massage, aromatherapy, acupressure, positioning, encouragement and timing contractions.  This support will allow you to be more comfortable and to stay at home for a longer period of time, which may reduce the need for medical interventions such as pitocin and epidurals.  Having a nurse with you at home often relaxes both parents, which helps lead the way for a more relaxed birth.  In the hospital, it is often comforting to have an experienced and familiar support person stay with you throughout your labor and birth.

How will my nurse help me during the postpartum period?

The postpartum period comprises the first few days, weeks and months following the birth of your baby.  This is such a joyous time, but can also be exhausting and overwhelming.  Having a nurse visit you at home gives you the opportunity to ask questions, learn how to care for your baby and get some much-needed sleep.  We can assist with breastfeeding, which can be especially helpful in the first few weeks while both mom and baby are learning what to do.  We can also provide education regarding successful sleep and soothing techniques and assist with soothing a fussy baby.  Our medical training allows us to provide health assessments for both you and your baby.  We monitor your infant’s weight and vital signs to assess that your infant is growing and thriving appropriately.  Hiring a nurse from The Baby Grove provides a hands-on learning experience and professional assistance at your side when you need it most.  The care we give you will help to alleviate anxiety, which is proven to reduce the risk of postpartum depression.  We will care for your family as a whole to ensure a smooth transition for all.

Why is it so beneficial to have overnight support?

In the first few weeks of life, babies do not differentiate between day and night.  Their circadian rhythms are very different from those of adults, which can make it especially exhausting for parents.  While newborns need to wake to feed every few hours, there are certain techniques that can help to set the foundation for healthy sleep habits and long-term sleep patterns.  We will help create a safe and secure sleep environment for your baby, which in turn will allow both you and your baby to sleep better. Healthy sleep habits can be started at any age and it is never too late to help your baby sleep better.  All of our approaches are loving, kind and effective!  In adults, lack of sleep can be extremely stressful and unhealthy.  Adequate sleep will help your body to heal faster after birth and reduce rates of postpartum depression.  When you get a good night’s sleep, you will be more prepared physically, mentally and emotionally to care for yourself, your baby and your family.

Will my partner or family feel left out?

By no means do we take the place of your partner or family.  The arrival of a baby is a very special and exciting time in life and we are there to complement it.  Our goal is to take some of the pressure off of your partner and/or family and to offer support to everyone.  During labor/delivery, having a private Registered Nurse with you allows everyone to feel more comfortable, which will lead to a more loving and relaxed birth environment.  Once your baby arrives, we encourage everyone to ask for information and assistance.  Having a nurse in your home gives you, your partner and your family the opportunity to learn how to care for the baby, ask questions and get some sleep!

Regardless of whether it is your significant other, your sister or your mother, families are an intricate part of helping to care for a newborn.  We are inclusive of family members while supporting you in a personal manner.

Do I need to sign up for postpartum services prior to the birth of my baby?

We work extremely hard to be as flexible as possible in order to best serve our families.  Due to the high demand for services, it is helpful to meet with us in advance and reserve services prior to the birth.  However, we understand that often families don’t realize that they need support until after they are home with the baby, and we certainly welcome families in those situations.  We encourage you to call us at any point and we will do our best to accommodate your needs!
